Guitar setup is mostly about two things. The first is fighting against natural guitar wear and tear and the second is fitting the guitar to your style of play.
This happens whether or not you even pick up a guitar. Changes in temperature, humidity, and other extreme weather conditions such as flooding can wreak havoc on your guitar. In addition to this, simple bumps and scratches all contribute to shifting the wood from how it was when it left the factory. Shifting is when the wood moves in any direction away from the centre true position. The wood warps. In acoustic guitars, the most common change resulting from shifting can be seen on the neck and strings. Heavier gauge strings tend to chew away frets more quickly. They also tend to apply more pulling force on the ends of the strings which can partially detach the bridge or bend the entire top of the guitar upwards. Luckily for all of these problems, there are simple and effective solutions. Call us and we can talk about your specific problem.
Now we have the guitar back in good working order, it is at this point important we need to ensure that the guitar is being fit to the customer. Imagine the right pair of shoes. It is important to get the right kind, size and fit so that they are comfortable to walk in. Most guitars can be fit to your needs so that it is of optimal comfort to play. String height and string gauge become crucial in determining this comfort. For example, for an acoustic guitar player who loves a big strumming style, slightly higher action and heavier gauge strings would be appropriate. This is because heavy strumming causes the strings to move in all directions with a large amplitude or volume. This is only one example and every style is different.
